Photos: Tulsa, OK Highlights
We just arrived in Ponca City after driving through the Osage Reservation. Here are a few highlights from our time in Tulsa. Before we left, we went to Wild Oats Market to stock up on food (our exciting diet: lentils, soup, rice, Odwalla Bars, almond cereal and soy milk). As we entered the parking lot, we immediately noticed the diverse array of bumper stickers.
We stopped at this gun shop/shooting range and watched a young man practice with a rifle he inherited from his grandfather. Another young man was shooting a handgun.
We spent some time driving around the city, which is spread out and rapidly growing. Outside the old downtown, the city has unintelligible areas of suburban patches and highway strip malls that offer everything from indoor gun ranges and sporting goods stores to strip clubs and chain stores. This strip club is down the street from a church.

Here's a little bit of trivial information from a native Tulsan:
We have more churches per capita than any other city in Oklahoma, perhaps the Midwest - we have many mega churches with populations of 10,000 or more. We have many ministries here and are often referred to as the "buckle of the Bible belt".
Consequently, we have a large homosexual population and quite the Gay Pride Parade every year. A land of contradictions is this - as the photos here so beautifully show.
Tulsa is a nice city to raise kids - I've got 4. But my wife and I are really starting to pine for life in a Blue state.
We also have a very active Pagan community as well.

Highlights of Tulsa?!? Looks like they ended up in the worst part of town. There are a lot of pretty areas in Tulsa. Just seen what they wanted to see I guess. Will always love Tulsa because I was born and raised there.Have a lot of great memories. Rogers 71'
Seriously, i agree with the annon who said you ended up in the worst part! Tulsa is sooo much more that hippy tie-dye, strip clubs, and Bible-belt bumper stickers. Maybe you just saw what you wanted to see, or posted what you wanted others to see, which would be extremely unfair to Tulsa. I'm not gonna say it's my favorite place to be, because my favorite places are overseas, but I will say that I'm disappointed in the way you've betrayed Tulsa here. Next time you claim to post the 'highlights' of a city, try actually following through please.
Sorry, misleading headline. We met great people in Tulsa. We were drawn to the hippy van and right wing restaurant for obvious reasons...
I grew up in Los Angeles and moved to Tulsa almost 10 years ago. I would say that you went to probably one of the most run down parts of the city. There are so many beautiful parts of Tulsa such as Brookside, Utica Square, Riverside Drive and you could have even gone just over the river to Jenks. Or down the highway to Broken Arrow. Tulsa is known for being very diverse which is why a lot of new products are tested in this market before being released nationwide. I would say that this was an extremely unfair misrepresentation of an entire city.
Being a proud Tulsa resident and Route 66 enthusiast, I find nothing wrong with this post. Frankly, I find the insufferable yuppie mentality of some Southsiders and suburbanites to be the real embarrassment in this area.
Brookside, Utica Square, and Riverside are nice enough, but I didn't move to Tulsa for fashionable neighborhoods and upscale shopping. I moved here because I loved the businesses and people I found along the Route 66 corridor -- which includes The Right Wing, Tie-Dyes of Tulsa, and a host of other fun little shops and great restaurants. There's more to Tulsa than subdivisions and shopping malls, and I personally appreciate the fact that this post reflects that. I especially enjoyed the bumper sticker photos, which show the diversity of opinions and ideas here in Tulsa.
