The Taliban are Brutally Killing Afghans for Teaching Girls

Another heartbreaking story about Afghanistan, a country we've completely abandoned:
The gunmen came at night to drag Mohammed Halim away from his home, in front of his crying children and his wife begging for mercy.

The 46-year-old schoolteacher tried to reassure his family that he would return safely. But his life was over, he was part-disembowelled and then torn apart with his arms and legs tied to motorbikes, the remains put on display as a warning to others against defying Taliban orders to stop educating girls.

Mr Halim was one of four teachers killed in rapid succession by the Islamists at Ghazni, a strategic point on the routes from Kabul to the south and east which has become the scene of fierce clashes between the Taliban and US and Afghan forces.

Apparently the majority of Afghans don't share your pessimism...

"...a country we've completely abandoned"

Maybe I missed something, but isn't that exactly what you want us to do in Iraq?

thanks for the opportunity to clear something up, jack-o. Speaking as a true blue liberal, never once did I oppose the invasion of Afghanistan and the elimination of the Taliban, friends and sponsors of Al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. It was absolutely necessary and if it helps free or lift up the women of that country then great, that's even better. On the other hand, never once did I think the invasion and occupation of Iraq was anything other than a completely stupid idea. As the Bush admin has never had an iota of credit with me, I never bought their garbage about WMDs in Iraq. I never bought the line that occupying that country was a legitimate part of the war on terror. It was an agressive war which, in my opinion, hijacked the war on terror to fufill the arrogrant, greedy plans of the neocons to bring that country under the direct control of oil companies and the conservative elite running the country. Given the current state of Iraq, I'd say I was right about that all along; It was an incredibly idiotic idea to invade Iraq. Does that clear things up for you, Jack? Oh and no, I'm not Rose. Just someone who has a few minutes to spare that I don't mind using to point out the obvious to my less perceptive countrymen on the political right.

Well, okay.

But my question still stands. Taking the statement that we abandoned Afghanistan at face value...should we likewise abandon the people of Iraq?

I got the feeling that "abandoning the people of Afghanistan" was intended to be a criticism. Maybe I'm wrong.

Abandon, as in we left Afghanistan in shambles to go start a war that was based on lies.
We should leave Iraq immediately, support a real peacekeeping force, and spend the billions we GAVE to contractors on rebuilding efforts. We owe the Iraqi people for years to come.
For a real plan on getting out of Iraq, read this excellent piece by George McGovern.

Well, for one thing, Afghanistan hasn't existed any way except shambles for a long long time.

And "support a real peacekeeping force?"

And who, or what might that be?

As for McGovern, he seems to be suffing from memory problems...
