End the Occupation Now

A 22-year-old Marine and a 29-year-old sailor have launched an Appeal for Redress from the War in Iraq. So far, the initiative has received 1,028 signatures from active-duty and reserve troops calling for an end to the war.

The signatures were delivered to lawmakers this morning in DC. Members of the Out of Iraq Caucus, including California Representatives Lynne Woolsey, Maxine Waters, and Barbara Lee met with the troops to acknowledge the appeal.

Under the military whistleblower protection act, military members can send appeals to members of Congress without reprisal.

Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice, says the appeal is “simply unprecedented.”

Tomorrow at 11:00 am PST, Representatives Woolsey, Lee, and Waters will hold a press conference to introduce “The Bring the Troops Home and Iraq Sovereignty Restoration Act.” The legislation would force President Bush to withdraw all U.S. forces currently in Iraq within six months.

I'm just wondering when you're going to start blaming the Democrats for the continuation of the war. How much longer are you going to give a pass to Pelosi and Harry Reid? By refusing to use their power of the purse to bring the war to a close they are only endorsing a symbolic resolution.

At least I can respect Senator Ted Kennedy. He not only wants the thing over, consequences be damned, but he's got the courge to admit it.

Pelosi and Reid are no better than Bush. And Progressives who refuse to call them on their passive complicity with the administration have lost all credibility. What a bunch of wimps.

haha. Those who followed Bush blindly are now wondering why Democratic voters aren't holding their leaders responsible.

When Pelosi came to SF months ago, she was drowned out by protesters.

There's another difference between the left and right, dem and repub, liberal and conservative. The left actually criticizes their own. The right, well, look at the last six years.

And there's this:

Poor Rahm and the Democrats. They've not even been sworn into the Majority yet, and they're already having their feet held to the fire.

We suspect this won't be the last time. Particularly if the Dems decide to play it safe instead of taking seriously the clear mandate for accountability they received at the polls last November.

Gold Star mom Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son Casey in Iraq, joined other protesters on Capitol Hill today to lobby Congress Members for a swift end to the War in Iraq. They interrupted a Democratic press conference today, held to announce ethics reform packages, with chants of "De-escalate! Investigate! Troops Home Now!" Rahm never stood a chance.

Military families are currently walking the halls of DC demanding meetings with Pelos, Reid, etc...but the liberal media doesn't bother to cover it.

If true Republicans stood up for what is right, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Nice try, timmy.

I'm not sure I get your point, except to say that you won't criticize Pelosi and Reid for yanking the funding of the war because it was the Republicans who made this mess. Whatever. The question now is: What are you going to do about it NOW THAT YOU HAVE A MAJORITY IN BOTH HOUSES?

If you believe the war can’t be won and there’s nothing to be gained by staying, then, to paraphrase Sen. John Kerry, you’re asking more men to die for a mistake. You should demand withdrawal. But that might cost votes, so they opt for nonbinding symbolic votes.

Funny how "no blood for oil" bothered you so much whereas "no blood for votes" dosn't seem to bother you at all.

Oops...that should be "NOT yanking" war funding in the paragraph above.

I'm just saying...for however misguided you think Bush is that he wants to win the war, the American people know where he stands. What the Democrats believe is anybody’s guess. And from their actions (or the lack thereof) it looks like they are willing to trade the lives of our soldiers for votes.

So go ahead and keep blaming Bush for getting us into the war ...THREE YEARS AGO...And yes, I suppose it will divert attention away from the Democrats lack of courage to fix anything ...for a while anyway. It doesn't look like the media (much like this blog) is exactly holding their feet to the fire. Guess we'll just have to sit back and wait to see how many lives the Democrats are willing to sacrifice for votes in 2008. Comfortable?

dude, do you ever post anything constructive here. I've been a lurker for more than a year and all you do is defend Bush and slam everyone else, except for Malkin and the GOP. The American people know where Bush stands?? I guess you've ignored the story about the embassy and the permanent bases near Iraq's oil bases. The majority of the American people have no fucking clue where he stands. Most can't even answer: why did Bush bomb Iraq?

Do I ever post anything constructive here? Gosh, I thought I just did.

If you think it's important for us to get out of Iraq then it's time you and other anti-war Democrats start holding the Democrats accountable for doing something about it. Obviously you don't think what the Republicans and the President are going to do anything constructive, so why keep blathering on about how the whole thing is Bush's fault and start demanding something from the people you just elected that hold majorities in both houses?

Like I said before, at least Ted Kennedy has the guts to back up what he says with action. I can respect that.

And please excuse me if you don't think I'm being properly constructive to compliment Ted Kennedy. Another thing...just how badly do you really need another voice on this blog "constructively" bitching about the myriad of evils committed by George Bush? You know, despite all the good that accomplishes?

A little something you guys might want to mull over at some point....Bush ain't gonna be President again. That's right, he's in his last two years in his last term. He's a lame duck President and the Dems control both houses. Do I really have to spell it out for you?

Take the Pledge

All Presidential Candidates should make pledges like those below. If they refuse, then you should refuse to vote for them.

1. No More Oil Wars.

2. Work for independence from foreign oil on day one.

3. No more wars for corporate profit.

4. No more secret deals for $4 per gallon gas.

5. No more Chicken Hawks promoting wars of choice when they themselves avoided combat.

6. Make government green--if you can't make what you have the most control over green, I don't care about your plans to make the country green.

7. No more torture.

8. No more lying about torture.

9. No more re-defining torture.

10. No more drunken hunting.

11. No more secret deals with big corporations to divide up the spoils before the war even starts.
